Job Summary 1 Regular Full-Time Position
Must be available Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.
Must be flexible with schedule changes in order to meet operational needs. 

  • Responsible for managing a State certified workplace drug testing and clinical substance abuse testing laboratory.
  • Responsible for the direct supervision of employees including recruitment, training, development and performance management.
  • Regularly refers to CFR 49 Part 40 regulations and other Fed/State regulations to ensure that drug testing procedures for employment purposes are followed and in compliance with industry standards and requirements.
  • Investigates, researches and recommends possible corrective action to address collection errors, processing errors, procedure errors, etc.
  • Serves as a resource to physicians and answers questions regarding drug results, issues with metabolism, possible drug interactions, etc.
  • Responds to inquiries and shares knowledge with regard to various testing methods (Including EIA & GC/MS) and outcomes and makes recommendations/solutions based on specific needs/concerns.
  • Provides expert testimony and defends test results, the chain of custody process and other forensic practices.
  • Provides training, technical presentations, and interacts with print and broadcast media.
  • Markets DLS toxicology services.  Establishes and maintains good public relations with institutions and the community.
Qualifications Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related science and successful completion of training in an approved School of Medical Technology; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree, relevant training, and comparable work experience, OR
  • Toxicology: A Ph.D. in one of the natural sciences; or a Bachelor’s degree in a natural science with Ph.D.-equivalent training and experience in toxicology, pharmacology, chemistry, or biological chemistry.


  • Seven years experience as MT or MLT or Specialist with relevant clinical training in Toxicology.
  • Three years of supervisory or managerial experience.


  • Certified as an MT/MLS, MLT, Categorical (e.g. M(ASCP), or Specialist (e.g. SM(ASCP) by one of the following National Commission of Health Certifying Agencies or by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health Laboratories Branch:

a. American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP-BOC),

b. American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB),

c. American Medical Technologists (AMT)

d. Toxicology: Additional certification by the American Board     of Forensic Toxicologists (ABFT) preferred.


Hawaii State License as Technologist, Technician, or Specialist, as appropriate.


  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both in verbal and written form.
  • Effective coaching skills.
  • Intermediate personal computer skills preferred, including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and routine database. (Ex: send/receive email, create letters, format data, use tables, insert objects)

Must possess a valid State of Hawaii (or equivalent) motor vehicle license and a current acceptable traffic abstract.
